Applications are now open for the National Humanities Center Fellowship Program for the 2025-2026 academic year. This fellowship offers scholars a unique opportunity to make substantial progress on their research projects, engage with peers in their field, and enjoy a break from the typical academic routine for a period of focused study and reflection.
Fellows will settle into the National Humanities Center’s modern, glass-and-brick facility, which is set against the tranquil backdrop of a Carolina pine forest. Each Fellow is provided with a private study, creating an ideal environment for reading, thinking, and writing. Additionally, the Center features numerous spaces both inside and outside the building for solitary work or for discussing ideas with other scholars.
Stipend Details
The stipend amounts are tailored to meet the individual needs of the Fellows and the Center’s financial capacity. Typically, the Center aims to cover half of the Fellow’s salary, with the expectation that the Fellow’s home institution will provide the remaining amount. Other grants or institutional support received during the fellowship may also affect the stipend amount provided by the Center.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must hold a doctorate or have equivalent scholarly credentials.
- Mid-career and senior scholars are strongly encouraged to apply. Emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed publications are also welcome.
- The Center does not fund the revision of doctoral dissertations.
- Applications are accepted from scholars in all humanities fields, as well as from those in the natural and social sciences, the arts, professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects.
Application Process
The application period opens on July 1, 2024, and the deadline for submissions is October 3, 2024. Interested candidates must complete the online application form and submit the following documents:

- A 1,000-word project proposal
- A short bibliography (up to two pages)
- A curriculum vitae (up to four pages)
- A one-page tentative outline of the project’s structure (if the project is a book, provide an outline of chapters; otherwise, outline the project’s components and their progress to date)
Applicants must also provide the names and contact information for three references, who will be prompted via email to submit a letter of recommendation. All recommendation letters must be submitted by the October 3, 2024 deadline.
